Unemployment rate drops slightly to 5.9% in July – Jobs

The unemployment rate fell to 5.9% in July, according to data released this Wednesday by the National Statistics Institute (INE). Compared to the previous month, there was a slight decrease of 0.1 percentage points.

“The unemployment rate stood at 5.9%, down by 0.1 percentage points from the previous month and by 0.7 percentage points from July of the previous year, having remained unchanged from three months earlier” , reveals the INE.

The national statistics authority estimates that in July the unemployed population declined by 1.1% from the previous month to 306.2 thousand. The reduction is even greater when compared to the unemployed population registered in the same period last year (10.2% less). On the other hand, the employed population reached 4,876.2 thousand, having been observed “a decrease in relation to the previous month and three months before (0.1% in both)”. Compared to the same period last year, the unemployment rate increased by 0.9%.

The active population decreased by 0.1%, compared to the previous month, to a total of 5,182.5 thousand, while the inactive population increased by 0.3%, compared to May, to 2,478 thousand.

The rate of underutilization of work was situated at 11.5%, 0.1 percentage points more than in the previous month and 0.9 percentage points less than in the same month of the previous year.
