Unavailable DDR5 can be bought on eBay, quality 32GB kits have climbed to ~ $ 2000

It was known from the beginning that DDR5 would be more expensive. No wonder ≥50% faster modules will not cost the same as classic DDR4. The price, which should have been 50-60% higher at first, would thus correspond to the difference in data throughput.

But MSI, which came up with a price forecast, had no idea that no one had ordered rubber power management chips (PMICs), without which the memories can’t work. Because DDR5 has different power requirements than DDR4, these are new types of PMICs – existing ones cannot be used for DDR4. Given the order deadlines and delivery times that currently prevail in the semiconductor industry, the situation cannot be expected to improve significantly in the foreseeable future.

DDR5 are not available or are poorly available. It is exploited by traffickers who have either connections or patience and get some DDR5 – so that they can sell it immediately at a significantly higher price. Quite an interesting business with DDR5 started on eBay. Memory kits with better parameters (higher beats and lower timing) can be seen for about $ 1000 for 16 GB and over $ 2000 for 32 GB.

Not only are they visible at these prices, but sales tracking tools are actually closing deals. They even sell well for higher amounts. Last week, 15 kits were sold at prices starting at $ 1100, with the sale price reaching $ 2,500 on November 21.

The meaningfulness of such a purchase is, of course, highly questionable; even in the high-end segment, the resulting price / performance ratio is catastrophic. Tests have shown that current-generation processor cores do not even present a DDR4 performance limit (often, on the contrary, they prefer lower DDR4 latencies) and more powerful integrated graphics, where higher DDR5 throughput would make sense, are not yet on the market. Customers pay extra for the feeling.
