Five Bangladeshi peacekeepers who sacrificed their lives while on duty in peacekeeping missions in different countries of the world have been awarded posthumously the prestigious ‘Dag Hammarskjöld Medal’ by the United Nations. Ambassador Mohammad Abdul Muhith, Permanent Representative of Bangladesh to the United Nations, received the medal from UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres in a ceremony organized on this occasion at the UN headquarters on Thursday (May 25).
In a notification sent from the office of the Permanent Representative, in this honor ceremony, 103 peacekeepers from 39 countries who died while on duty in the United Nations peacekeeping operations in 2022 were awarded this medal for their supreme sacrifice.
Among the five peacekeepers who sacrificed their lives in Bangladesh were Sergeant Mohammad Manjur Rahman in the UNICEF mission in Abeite, Lance Corporal Kafil Majumder in the UNMIS mission in South Sudan, Soldier Mohammad Sharif Hossain, Soldier Mohammad Jahangir Alam and Soldier Mohammad Jasim Uddin in the Minuska mission in the Central African Republic.
After receiving the medal on behalf of the peacekeepers who sacrificed their lives, Ambassador Muhith signed the condolence book kept in the General Assembly Hall as part of the ceremony. In his condolence message, he paid deep respect to all the peacekeepers who laid down their lives in peacekeeping and expressed his deepest condolences to their bereaved families for this irreparable loss.
Bangladesh is currently the top peacekeeping sending country for UN peacekeeping operations. At the moment, about 7,500 peacekeepers of Bangladesh are on duty in 9 missions around the world. 166 Bangladeshi peacekeepers have sacrificed their lives while on duty.
Notably, ‘Dag Hammarskold Medal’ was introduced in the name of the second Secretary General of the United Nations, Dag Hammarskold.
