Ultimate Ears Wonderboom 3 review

In 2022, the range of wireless bluetooth speakers is enormous; many companies sell such a speaker in all price ranges. One of these is Ultimate Ears, which is part of Logitech. We have tested the brand’s latest speaker, the Wonderboom 3, and below we share our findings.

Compact, sturdy and waterproof

The design of the Wonderboom 3 is perfectly fine. The bluetooth speaker is compact, sturdy and has a fabric finish. That feels and looks quite luxurious. Characteristic are the large volume buttons on the front (which are nevertheless a bit difficult to press) and there is a loop to hang the speaker on something. At the top are another three buttons, and they are sometimes difficult to press.

The IP67 certification is handy, making the Wonderboom 3 completely dust and waterproof. That’s great for when you’re lying by the pool or going to the beach. It’s nice that the speaker also floats – so you could throw it in the pool to continue listening to music there – but we wonder how good the sound will sound then.

To return to the design: the Wonderboom looks exactly the same as previous Ultimate Ears devices – and a bit more playful than many other Bluetooth speakers. There are several colors to choose from and the photos in this review show the ‘Joyous Bright’ version; gray with some yellow/green accents.

Great sound

Most importantly, of course, is how the Ultimate Ears Wonderboom 3 sounds. The device easily connects to your Android phone via Fast Pair. You turn on the speaker, see a notification on your phone, press ‘Connect’ and can then immediately disconnect. Fortunately, the Wonderboom 3 produces beautiful sounds.

The bluetooth speaker has a full sound and quite a bit of bass, provided you place it on a solid surface. It can also be quite loud and still sounds great. Great for when you go out for a day and want to listen to music, but I also used the Wonderboom 3, for example, as a speaker for my laptop.

It is also possible to connect two Wonderboom 3s together, so that you get stereo sound. Unfortunately we were not able to test that. Furthermore, you have very few options to adjust the sound, although there is an ‘Outdoor’ mode. You activate it via the button at the bottom of the speaker and raise the volume, but largely omit the bass.

Long battery life, old-fashioned charging

The Ultimate Ears Wonderboom 3 has a battery life of about 14 hours; enough to listen to music all day long. Compared to its predecessor, this is an hour longer and generally comparable to other Bluetooth speakers of around 100 euros.

A downside is that you have to charge the Wonderboom 3 via an outdated micro-USB connection. Fortunately, Ultimate Ears supplies a micro-USB cable, but of course we prefer that the device has a USB-c port. Then you can also simply use the charger of your smartphone, tablet or laptop with the speaker. A full charge takes about 2.5 hours, which is quite a long time.

Checking the battery status is also a bit cumbersome. You do this by briefly pressing the volume buttons simultaneously, after which you hear a sound. Based on the tune, you know whether the Wonderboom 3 is (almost) full, has only 50 percent battery left or if it almost needs a charger. In itself fine, but you have to understand this first.

Conclusion Ultimate Ears Wonderboom 3 review

All in all, we are quite satisfied with the Wonderboom 3. The speaker sounds good, is sturdy and waterproof and you can easily take it with you. It is a pity that the device still charges via micro-usb and that the buttons are not fully pressed.

We can live with that, because the Wonderboom 3 offers enough for the 99.99 euros that Ultimate Ears asks. Incidentally, you can also go for its predecessor – the Wonderboom 2 – because this device is almost identical and slightly cheaper (about 10 euros).
