UL Benchmarks released the 3DMark CPU Profile test to put processors in order

The test program drives the same load with different amounts of active threads, giving a more realistic picture of processor performance at different loads compared to a single test.

UL Benchmarks, from home landscapes, has released a new test for its 3DMark test suite. The 3DMark CPU Profile provides a comprehensive view of processor performance in a variety of situations.

According to UL Benchmarks, a single test today cannot provide a realistic picture of processor performance because the number of cores has grown faster than applications have taken advantage of them. For this reason, the 3DMark CPU Profile runs a test with various physics and other simulations a total of six times. First with the maximum threads of the processor, then 16, 8, 4, 2, and finally with one thread.

Six results are also given, one for each test run, but at the same time they are comparable. For example, a very fast quad-threaded processor may mask a slower processor with eight threads in use in the test. The result of the latter would continue to scale up to the 8-thread test, but the result would still be lower than the result of a faster processor scalable up to only four threads.

The results help build a comprehensive picture of processor performance in different situations, but the user should still know how many threads the applications relevant to him are able to utilize and how much resources the background processes take up. The result is visualized on the bar, where the green part is the result of your own test run, the black line is the median result on the same processor, and the gray part shows the distance to the best result on the same processor.

The 3DMark CPU Profile is available as a free upgrade to 3DMark Advanced Edition and Professional Edition. In honor of the new test, 3DMark is at an 85% discount and costs € 3.74 in both UL Benchmarks’ own online store and Steam. The offer is valid until July 8.
