UL Benchmarks released a 3DMark Storage test that measures the speed of storage space

The new test is a separately purchased add-on to the 3DMark Advanced version, but for the Professional version the test comes as a free upgrade.

Originally an effort from domestic landscapes, now part of an international group, UL Benchmarks has released a new addition to the 3DMark test battery. 3DMark Storage, as the name suggests, is designed to test the speed of your computer’s storage space.

3DMark Storage brings an easy, real-world scenario-based stick to the speed of SSDs, hard drives and hybrid drives. According to the company, most storage speed measurement tools have been developed with hard drives in mind and are based on synthetic test scenarios that do not match real-world usage.

The new 3DMark test has been implemented with recordings of input and ouput activity caused by real-world scenarios (“traces”). These recordings allow the company to measure the performance of different stations easily and quickly. Scenarios used include launching Battlefield V, Call of Duty: Black Ops 4, and Overwatch to the menus, recording Overwatch on 1080p OBS, installing The Outer Worlds on Epic Games Launcher, saving game mode in The Outer Worlds, and Counter-Strike : Copy the Global Offensive Steam folder from an external SSD to a system disk.

3DMark Storage gives its own points at the end of the test, in addition to which it measures the bandwidth used and the average response time. As examples of 3DMark Storage points, four drives were given on three different buses: Samsung SSD 860 Evo 1 TB on SATA3, 1193 points, WD Black SN750 NVMe 500 GB PCIe 3.0 M.2 NVMe, 2014 points, Samsung 980 Pro 500 GB PCIe 4.0 M. 2 NVMe, 2858 points and topped the Intel Optane SSD 900P 280GB PCIe 3.0 M.2 bus, 4241 points.

3DMark Storage is available as a separately purchased add-on to 3DMark Advanced. The add-on is priced in Finland at EUR 2.39 and is available both directly from UL Benchmarks and on Steam. For 3DMark Professional, the test comes as a free upgrade.
