In a small dark workshop in Zaporozhye, Ukraine, there is a mannequin with metal shoulder straps and simple swords, waiting for another medieval struggle. Craftsmen, however, have ideas elsewhere, focusing on the production of bulletproof padding for vests for the Ukrainian army, writes AFP.
On the shelves, steel plates connected with layers of foam are waiting to be riveted, which are finally covered with a thick strip of gray tape. On the wall above the craftsmen hangs a blue dinosaur and colorful flowers, which seem to give men courage. On the shelf is just a piece of which lies the armor cuts in the medieval style.
The owner of the workshop is a burly man with a shaved head, whose passion is medieval fights. In Ukraine, this discipline is one of the sports, in 2019, about 100 kilometers from Kiev, the World Cup was held. Thousands of participants from Britain, France, Germany or Australia met him in fights on horseback without them.
“It’s a rough sport,” admits Vadim Myrnychenko, who has had several concussions and broken ribs in 20 years. “But like every man, I want to hold a sword and fight like a knight.”
His passion became a living, with up to 16 employees working in the export-oriented workshop. However, the covidu-19 pandemic made it impossible to organize competitions and forced him to lay off ten employees.
When an AFP reporter visited the company’s workshop in southern Ukraine, a box of metal guards was waiting to be sent to China. But over the past two months, priorities have changed as Russia invades Ukraine.Read also The Sherlock on Twitter hope that their findings about the war will help in court
“One day my friend and I decided to test our products, our swords and scythes. So we went to the shooting range and it turned out that their metal could stop the bullets, “says the owner of the workshop.
According to him, the army refused to accept him, “despite tactical training and knowledge.” He decided to use his knowledge of metal processing for the production of bulletproof boards, produced them in two small furnaces and served as a filler in the bulletproof vests of the Ukrainian security forces.
He distributed the first twelve pieces, financed by donations from foreign clients, free of charge to friends in the army, police and militia. He sold about 30 more pieces for $ 150, which corresponds to the cost of production.
“One acquaintance who had our boards in his vest got Russian fire, but thanks to them he stayed alive. He only has a broken rib, “rejoices Andriy Palij, Myrnychenko’s friend and collaborator. “I am very proud that we are also involved in helping our country,” says the man with the long beard and shaved hair, except for a huge braid on the scalp.Read also HOAX: The picture does not show a NATO laboratory, it is from a board game project
A small company that doesn’t even have a name should be able to produce about thirty more leads, says its boss. But then the material and finances run out and they start making knives and machetes again. But even that does not prevent Myrnychenko from looking for improvements for the remaining pieces. On Sunday, the sniper and one employee went to the shooting range again to test a version of the protective plates consisting of three thin plates instead of two stronger ones. Some of the many bullets they fired during the test but penetrated the shield.
“Now we know it wasn’t a good idea,” says the quiet owner, who wasn’t deterred in the slightest.
While the Russian army is increasing its onslaught on the southern front and in some parts of Zaporozhye is heard remote shelling, Myrnychenko remains. He refused to evacuate his family and is ready to protect them. “What else would my life make?” He concludes.
