Ukraine to use British long-range missile ‘Storm Shadow’ in earnest

[서울=뉴시스]Reporter Shin Jeong-won = CNN reported on the 16th (local time) that Ukraine has begun using the long-range missile ‘Storm Shadow’ supported by the UK.

CNN reported, citing two US officials and a Western official familiar with the matter, that “Ukrainian forces have begun using long-range ‘Storm Shadow’ missiles provided by Britain to strike Russian targets.”

Ukraine’s Ministry of Defense declined to comment.

The Storm Shadow is a long-range cruise missile jointly developed by Britain and France. It has stealth capabilities and is usually launched from the air. The range is over 250km.

This gave Ukraine a new long-range strike capability. Britain became the first country to provide Ukraine with weapons capable of reaching deep into Russian-occupied territory.

Although the missiles reach the Russian mainland, Ukraine has promised that they will only be used to strike Russian military targets in Russian-occupied eastern territories and the Crimean Peninsula.

British Defense Secretary Ben Wallace officially announced on the 11th that the missile was being supplied to Ukraine. It did not specify whether it had already been delivered or how much was provided.

Russia claimed on the 12th that Ukrainian forces attacked industrial facilities in occupied Luhansk with “Storm Shadow”. On the 15th, it was said that the Russian military intercepted a Storm Shadow missile for the first time.
