UEFA urges the Ukrainian national team to remove political slogans on its new jersey

Suara.com – European football’s governing body (UEFA) told Ukraine it could keep the map showing Crimea on its new jersey, but had to drop the slogan “Glory to the heroes” because it had military connotations.

The Ukraine jersey, which will be used at the European Championship (Euro), has sparked protests from Moscow for covering a map of the Crimean peninsula which Russia annexed in 2014. However, the territory is still recognized internationally as part of Ukraine.

The slogan on the back reads “Glory to Ukraine” while the inside of the jersey reads: “Glory to the heroes” which is a military greeting in Ukraine.

UEFA said the map was of no concern given that it reflected a UN-recognized border, nor was it the slogan “Glory to Ukraine.”

However, UEFA asked for the second slogan to be removed because it was deemed to be clearly political, has historical and militaristic significance, said a UEFA statement quoted by Reuters on Thursday (10/6/2021).

Ukraine says the jersey is a symbol of national unity, and President Volodymyr Zelenskiy previously posted a selfie on Instagram wearing the jersey this week.

Relations between Moscow and Kiev deteriorated sharply following the annexation of Crimea and the start of a Russian-backed separatist insurgency in eastern Ukraine in 2014.

Commenting on the jersey controversy, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on Thursday that sport should not be mixed with politics.

“Sport is not a battlefield, but a competition arena, not a political arena but athletics. Be a sports hero and you will get your glory,” he said.
