Two 22-year-olds die in a landslide in Esposende – Portugal


Two people died this morning in Palmeira de Faro, Esposende municipality, victims of a landslide, a source from the Esposende Volunteer Firefighters told Lusa.

“A landslide on a slope hit a family home and caused two fatalities, aged 22,” said the Deputy Commander of Volunteer Firefighters in Esposende, Braga district.

The bodies are to be rescued. The operatives on the ground were waiting, around 06:00 am, for “the guarantee of safety conditions for heavy machinery to be used in the removal of debris”, said Júlio Melo.

In the landslide, in which “stones of some size” were dragged, “a compartment located at the back of the house was reached”, said the same source.

According to Esposende firefighters, there were six people in the house, two of them (fatal victims) in an annexe at the back.

There are 17 operators supported by eight vehicles for the site, according to the website of the National Emergency and Civil Protection Authority.

Among the means on site is a team of INEM psychologists, according to Esposende firefighters.
