Twitter’s source code leaked onto the internet, the company contacted the court

Parts of Twitter’s source code have been leaked onto the Internet. The company, which was taken over by the head of the Tesla car company Elon Musk last year, is trying to get information about the originator of the leak through the courts. Citing court records from last Friday, Reuters reported on Monday.

A user named FreeSpeechEnthusiast posted various parts of the source code on Github, according to a court document. The username is likely a reference to Musk, who describes himself as a “supporter of free speech” but has pushed through several major changes in how the network works since taking over the company.

The Github platform is owned by the software company Microsoft, and it already pulled the code at the request of Twitter on Friday. According to Twitter, the FreeSpeechEnthusiast account violated the company’s copyright.

After taking over Twitter, Musk reduced the number of employees by more than 70 percent, according to data reported by The New York Times at the end of February. The social network is facing an exodus of advertisers after easing content moderation requirements. Source code leakage is thus another problem for Musk.

The billionaire Tesla boss hinted at the weekend that the company’s price has fallen by more than half since he took over in October. He gave the company’s employees stock guarantees worth $20 billion (almost CZK 442 billion). He paid $44 billion for the social network operator last year.
