We Poles already have such a thing that we experience events from overseas as if it happened in our country. Is it trivial or serious. This time, however, it is very serious.
As you may have heard on January 6, 2021, a group of supporters of the outgoing US President Donald Trump stormed the Capitol, committing vandalism. 5 people were killed and about 50 were injured. The reason for the attack was an attempt to disrupt the counting of electoral votes. From the point of view of the considerations, it is more important what happened on the occasion and after. Donald Trump called for an end to the attack on the Capitol, but his accounts were removed from Facebook and Twitter. Thus, his contact with followers was significantly limited. Consequently, he was blamed for escalating aggression. His accounts were removed on charges of inciting hatred. However, Twitter did not consider incitement to hatred the tweet of the American television personality Kathy Griffin, who held Trump’s severed head (I did not find the tweet, but it hung for a minimum of 2 days). It all kicked up discussions about freedom of expression, panicked Twitter stock sales, and spread alternatives such as Parler, Gab, and partly Minds.
The question of freedom of speech
This dispute divides even the libertarian circles. Some believe that Twitter and Facebook had every right to do so. Others say this is an attack on freedom of speech. So who is right? Both sides.
First of all, you should be aware that when writing on Twitter, we use the servers and platform, i.e. the property of their owner. Therefore, by taking all restrictions against us, he acts in the field of his property. He is therefore master on his own. And if there are no contractual penalties for breaking the provisions of the regulations, it is difficult to pursue anything here. So is it true that there is no censorship if it happens in a private space? No. In this private space, censorship took place, to which the owner has the right. And we are under no obligation to use its services.
However, not everyone agrees with this approach. They are demanding penalties for those who do so, arguing this by attacking their right to freedom of speech. I just don’t know if the supporters of this approach are aware that it is analogous to the leftist theses that the Catholic Church by refusing to marry a gay couple violates their human right. The most radical proponents of these phrases demand that the government “make order” with the CC and force them to marry homosexuals. Now do you understand why the current situation is better after all? I will skip the postulates of internet censorship, which are a manifestation of a nail in the brain. Their author is the nationalist Konrad Smuniewski. Well sir, if these tools fall into the hands of the left, you will be the first to join the noplatform.
The question of monopolies and alternatives
There will be voices saying they are monopoly. And about Parler, Gabie and Minds have heard? As of today, the popularity and level of service are lower, but with development it will improve. And the popularity after the murderous and panic actions of the AppStore, Google Play, Amazon, Facebook and Twitter has only increased. To talk about a permanent monopoly, the above-mentioned entities would have to own the entire Internet or communicate with … the government. Yes, ladies and gentlemen. State interference is a precondition for a permanent monopoly. And there is no de facto. They have most, but not exclusivity. And thanks to you, they can even lose the majority. Where is the former monopoly of Nokia mobile phones today? Or the monopoly of Kodak cameras?
What are these alternatives? According to Wikipedia and “serious and reliable media” they are a tool of communication of extreme right-wing groups, extremists, white supremacists, fascists, which can be summed up with a short XD. Parler, unfortunately, has recently been attacked and data has been stolen from him. Was the attack ordered by any of the giants with which this server creates competition? This is a question of conspiracy theories. I was really amused by the Gazeta.pl article about it. Who is Donk Enby mentioned there? I will not penetrate. The author of the article uses fairly categorical statements such as “probably a nail in Parler’s coffin”, “a right-wing oasis of freedom of speech” and parrots after the older and wiser:
Now there are appeals on the American right to move to another platform – Gab. Just like Parler was something like Facebook, Gab is like Twitter. The portal was established in 2016. Its founder, Andrew Torba, said that he wanted to create a space for people with conservative views, free from left-wing censorship. – Every large source of information on the web, every large social networking site, is owned, controlled and managed by left-wing executives and employees from Silicon Valley – he said in a 2016 interview for the Washington Post.
The effect was that Gab has become a popular haven for those who have been excluded from major social media. A place full of racist content, conspiracy theories and calls to violence. Gab, however, has a strong point. Namely, it runs on private servers, which gives a certain independence from large companies such as Google, Amazon or Microsoft. Now the platform is to experience a siege and quickly gain new users.
Well, Agora in shape. Nobody took over and nobody got sick there. The narrative line stands firmly undisturbed as recently by a letter from a reader complaining that her daughter’s friends force her to be a non-binary person (which, by the way, prompts us to consider the sudden increase in declarations of belonging to the LGBT community in the 14-29 age group compared to the 30-50 group. ), for which Aleksandra Sobczak apologized heartily (screen from Marcin Dobski’s Twitter: https://twitter.com/szachmad/status/1349009789565730829 ) or, as before, an article that explained what the “LGBT Free Zones” really was all about.
If you want alternatives to leftist censorship, strengthen them with your presence. And leave Facebook only for contact with friends.
