Tropical plants, lots of light and vintage charm for a house in Madrid

In an elegant twentieth-century building, the interiors of a bourgeois apartment have been transformed by Studio Animal in an open house, with large communicating rooms and “private” space for the little ones.

The soul of yesteryear of the flat Madrid has not been distorted, as Javier J. Iniesta, director of Studio Animal explains: “The house had a fascinating time-worn patina: moldings, very high ceilings, thick walls, a fantastic parquet floor. Our proposal was to preserve and enhance these details, integrating them in a general revision of the spaces to make them suitable for the life of a family ».

The major intervention was the one necessary to connect the three rooms facing the street, which were initially very high but were cramped and not very bright. Removing the doors and realizing larger openings, highlighted by a matte blue ceramic coating, the dining room, the living room and the reading or study room for the children are now a single open space.

Beautiful the central bay window, where there is a light table. “The fixtures we have removed – continues Iniesta – have been transformed into three-leaf doors, very original and perfect for closing the master bedroom and the children’s bedroom”.

A winner gives character to the house mix di tropical plants (even a banana tree!), brightly colored furnishings and furnishings that fill almost every corner but with joy, without falling into disorder and bundling.

Interesting is the continuous movement between “up and down” as told by Studio Animal «Objects without a specific function and which may seem of little value are mixed with famous and precious design pieces: next to the Shiva vase by Ettore Sottsass there is a collection of seeds, while a series of stones collected from around the world are placed next to a very rare Japanese edition of Delirious New York di Rem Koolhaas ».

Particular attention was paid to the design of the lights and the choice of lamps, largely historical design pieces that make up a real collection. Iniesta concludes: «Lighting is essential in this small domestic universe. At night, the house transforms and lights up, the different colors of the springs paint it and change its appearance ».
