TrendForce predicts falling ram prices, we are not noticing it yet

Market researcher TrendForce predicts that the prices of working memory in the coming time going down. DDR3 and DDR4 memory should be about 13 to 18 percent cheaper this quarter than last quarter, with prices going down another 3 to 8 percent in the fourth quarter.

TrendForce previously expected declines of 8 to 13 percent (3rd quarter) and 0 to 5 percent (4th quarter), but has now adjusted this. Due to an excess of stock, manufacturers would have pushed prices further down.

In the Netherlands we don’t seem to notice much of this yet. If we look at a Corsair ValueSelect 4 GB memory bank, the average price (€21.95) is exactly the same as at the beginning of July. DDR4 has not really become cheaper either: a Corsair Vengeance LPX Black 16 GB set cost an average of €82.85 at the beginning of July, and now €79.30. So no significant decrease.

The price trend of the Corsair ValueSelect (4 GB, ddr3).

At ddr5 we also do not see a downward trend yet. Kingston’s Fury Beast 32 GB ddr5 kit was sold at the beginning of this quarter for 202 euros, and is now around 210. If we look a bit further in the past, we can see a significant price drop: on February 2, this set still cost 350 euros.

So it remains to be seen to what extent we can benefit from the lower factory prices. In any case, we are happy that manufacturers are realizing that the price ‘must’ go down if the supply exceeds the demand; Nvidia could learn something from this.
