Tragic record: More driving licenses revoked in 2020 than in any previous year

The number of revoked driving licenses increased sharply in 2020, and most cases of speeding increased.

Under 2020 41,603 driving licenses were revoked. This is an increase of 13.7 percent compared to 2019, and the highest listing ever.

In most cases, a traffic offense reported by the Police is behind the revocation of the driving license. The most common is “revocation ground 4”, ie speeding. This category increased by 31 percent, from 19,903 in 2019 to 26,050 in 2020.

– We see a sharp increase in the influx of confiscated driving licenses from the Police and that is the reason why the number of decisions from us is also increasing, says Mikael Andersson, press manager at the Swedish Transport Agency.

Differences across the country

The number of recalls increased in most parts of the country. The largest increase was in Västra Götaland County and Norrbotten County with 23.6 per cent and 22.7 per cent. In two counties, the number of revocations decreased compared with the previous year. In Kronoberg County, recalls decreased by 5.1 per cent and in Gotland County the most significant decrease is found with 17.6 per cent.

– It’s normal that there are variations with what it looks like with this issue in different parts of the country. In a county like Gotland, where there are few recalls in terms of numbers, each individual case will have a greater impact, which may explain the change in 2020, says Mikael Andersson.
