Whether a birthday party, movie night or romantic dinner: If you want to create a cozy atmosphere in your own four walls, you can’t avoid the right lighting. TP-Link offers a quick and easy solution with the intelligent light strip Tapo L920-5, which is supposed to provide atmospheric light with 16 million colors.
In addition to the light strip itself, the box contains a power cable, a lead with a reset button and a quick guide, which, however, only refers to the associated Tapo app. The light strip is 5 meters long and can be cut to size at various (marked) points. That makes it perfect for individual use. In addition, there is an adhesive strip on the back that sticks to almost every surface. According to the manufacturer, the PU coating of the Tapo L920-5 protects against moisture and dust, so that it can also be used in the bathroom (e.g. behind the mirror).
Installation and operation
After laying, the light strip must still be connected. It works quickly and easily. However, it is noticeable that the cable is way too short, especially when the lighting is mounted on the ceiling. The cable doesn’t even reach the floor, so the plug dangles above the floor – not a pretty sight in the living room. Therefore, the strip is more suitable for floor / wall mounting.
The Tapo L920-5 can be set up using an app and integrated into the home WiFi, which worked without any problems in the test. We found it great that no hub is required so that even beginners can get started right away. Control is also carried out using an app, regardless of whether it is about the selection of the color or color moods, the dimming function or the timer. If you like it more convenient, you can also control the Tapo L920-5 via voice (Google, Alexa).
Practical timer function
Thanks to the timer, the light strip can either act as a night light or simulate activity in the home when the user is absent – this is super practical, especially now that it is getting dark early. Another little gimmick is the sync-to-sound function, with which the light can be adjusted to the rhythm of the music. However, this only works if the light strip and mobile phone (with the app installed) are connected to the same WLAN.
Thanks to 16 million colors, every possible atmosphere can be conjured up in the room. The light strip can also be used as indirect lighting, for example when watching TV. The RRP is 44.90 euros.
