Toys that are hazardous to children’s health are sold in Latvia

During the first four months of the current year, as a result of control measures carried out by the SRS Customs Department, 3,377 units of counterfeit goods were identified in 47 batches.

Counterfeit perfumes, bicycle equipment, game consoles, mobile phones and their accessories, clothes, bags, watches, shoes and other goods are most frequently detected, LETA reports with reference to the Patent Office.

In total, in 2022, officials of the Customs Department of the State Revenue Service (SRS) identified 27,379 units of counterfeit goods, of which 70% or 19,171 were toys.

Counterfeit toys were most often found in shipments from China.

The most common fakes were constructors, toy models of various cars, dolls, children’s bicycles, etc.

Director of the Patent Office Agris Batalauskis claims that the production of counterfeit goods, including toys, uses raw materials hazardous to human health, they are of poor quality and pose a potential danger to children’s health.

It is often impossible to determine by their appearance and touch how safe children’s products and toys are being sold.

In particular, this applies to the chemical composition of goods – for example, the content of phthalates is not obvious and not immediately felt.

Phthalates are chemicals that are used to create soft plastics, predominantly polyvinyl chloride (PVC), to give the material color and odor retention.

Exposure to this chemical adversely affects the hormonal and reproductive systems and does not appear until many years later.

The Patent Council encourages parents to choose quality toys of known origin without putting the health and even life of their children at risk.
