Toyota GR Yaris switched to hydrogen as an experiment – DRIVE

Toyota began experiments with hydrogen in 1992, but it took up the development of a hydrogen internal combustion engine only in 2017 (at the same time the Hydrogen Council was organized). The show car indicates an intensification of efforts to popularize systems such as the FCEV with the European Car of the Year.

The 1.6 multi-fuel turbo engine (G16E-GTS) has already proved its effectiveness “in the harsh conditions of motorsport”: the five-door Toyota Corolla Sport has been participating in the Japanese Super Taikyu racing series since May. However, the hydrogen internal combustion engine is still in the early stages of development and is not ready for commercialization, so the “experimental concept” of the GR Yaris H2… The hatchback was originally powered by the G16E-GTS engine, so the transition to hydrogen required only a modified fuel delivery and injection system.

Shields with ventilation “gills” instead of windows raise unkind suspicions, as does the tinted rear window. But in the salons of hydrogen Yaris and Corolla unauthorized entry is prohibited.

According to Toyota, the G16E-GTS delivers “near-zero emissions.” Since hydrogen burns faster than gasoline, the engine stands out for “good responsiveness” and provides driving pleasure “through the acoustic and sensory sensations” of a conventional internal combustion engine. The Toyota Mirai sedan is designed differently, because it has a chemical reaction in fuel cells, nevertheless, the hydrogen tank and the refueling process are the same as those of the Yaris.
