Turkey is taking another historic step tomorrow in its efforts to focus on domestic and renewable energy sources. The first RES-G certificates issued within the scope of the Renewable Energy Source Guarantee (YEK-G) System, which entered into force on 1 June, will be traded on the Istanbul Energy Exchange tomorrow.
June 21, when the longest day will be experienced in Turkey, will be the green energy day this year. In his assessment to a group of journalists, Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Dönmez stated that they have taken a series of steps to promote and disseminate renewable energy on both the consumer and producer side, and said, “Our aim is to make use of the cost advantage due to supports, incentives and technology development in renewable energy by wider segments.” .
Renewable share of 50 percent
Describing renewable energy as “the energy of the future”, Dönmez said, “Today, our electricity generation from renewable energy has reached the level of 50 percent. On the other hand, today, a significant part of the components used to convert renewable resources such as solar, wind, hydroelectric, biomass and geothermal into energy is produced domestically.
Interest in green electricity
Explaining that there is a great demand for renewable energy in Turkey today, Dönmez said:
“We want to increase this mobility and level of participation in the renewable energy market. YEK-G is a new application that we will implement for the dissemination of renewable resources. The first organized market session day for the first YEK-G certificate of our market is today (Monday, June 21). From today, prices will be formed in the Organized YEK-G market. It will start to trade in hydraulic, solar, wind, geothermal, biomass-based contracts.”
Provided access to the consumer
Explaining that the YEK-G certificates were developed by EPİAŞ with 100 percent domestic and national facilities, Energy Minister Dönmez said, “With the system, we will offer a transparent and reliable environment to the participants. A unique code will be assigned to each 1 MWh RES-G Document to be produced through the system using blockchain technology. Thus, in YEK-G, consumers will be able to follow all the processes of the electricity they use, from production to consumption.”
The quest for a carbon-free future
Dönmez stated that, thanks to the RES-G System and the Organized RES-G Market, final consumers will contribute to a sustainable carbon-free future by using renewable energy. Explaining that consumers can voluntarily participate in this market, they can consume electricity from renewable energy sources and choose the source they want, Dönmez said, “Our companies and individual consumers can do this as a requirement of social responsibility, and our companies will also be able to use this document to document their carbon footprints in their sustainability reports.”
