An investigation into tobacco smuggling and tax fraud, worth seven million euros, today led to 30 searches being carried out in the districts of Lisbon, Setúbal, Faro, Porto, Coimbra, Braga and in the Madeira region.
According to an information note from the Public Prosecutor’s Office (MP), this inquiry conducted by the Central Department of Investigation and Penal Action is concerned with “suspects of the introduction into Portugal of large quantities of tobacco, originating in Morocco, without payment of the taxes due, whose value amounts to around seven million euros.
The thirty searches carried out, at home and elsewhere, aimed to investigate “facts likely to constitute crimes of fraudulent introduction into consumption, smuggling and tax fraud”.
No arrests are mentioned in the MP’s note.
The investigation was supported by the Lisbon Tax Action Detachment of the Tax Action Unit of the National Republican Guard (GNR) and the Customs Anti-Fraud Services Directorate of the Tax Authority (AT).
Around 80 GNR soldiers, around 20 AT inspectors and two teams from the Public Security Police (PSP) participate in the steps.
