To the blogger Moor about the legendary Houwalts – a nasty surprise

Blogger Maur asked me for help with the Houwald family. Namely, that I had to look in the archives in Germany and find something about the Houwalds from the former Borderlands of the Republic of Poland. About the Witolds and Wladyslaws Houwalts who lived about 100 years ago.

Helpful with it in my genes, I looked at the libraries and found 8 notebooks Götza von Houwalda “Contribution to the history of the von Houwald family” from 1963-83. “Contributions to the family history of the Counts, Barons and Lords of Houwald”.

Sparing no expense, I ordered the first two notebooks via the village library. Two scripts arrived in A4 format, written on a typewriter, less than 200 pages long. They contain copies of various documents. From the biography and the first testament Christopha von Houwalda (1601 – 1661), through the family tree, to various documents from the registers of nobility and aristocracy, small documents regarding the granting of property, marriages, positions, etc.

A small entry in the family tree has shattered some hopes.

The Houwalt family in Poland and Lithuania descended from Wilhelm Adolf von Houwald, apparently wrongly, with Wilhelm Adolf being considered the son of General Christoph Houwald. This Houwald family line, presumably illegal, will not be considered here.

The end was searched for in Götz von Houwald’s notebooks. A strange thing, because Wilhelm Adolf was born 7 years after the general’s death in Geneva, and he died at the age of 19 in Elblag. So it is a bit strange that he would be the forefather of the Polish and Lithuanian Houvalt.

Another word about General Christoph von Houwald – a soldier of fortune on the fronts of the Thirty Years’ War – is the one who won the Battle of Beresteczka for Poland. And for that he got Polish nobility to Brandenburg, Saxon and Swedish nobility, and an eagle in a crown from King Jan Kazimierz. That in 1624 Houwald fought against Poland in the Swedish army in Livonia, this did not bother anyone.
