For the past year, Messer Tehnogas has been facing a challenge we have never faced before, it was necessary to meet the increased demands of medical institutions for medical oxygen and at the same time maintain the production of gases for the needs of the economy.   • The technologies and solutions offered by Messer are applied in almost all branches of industry. We know about some of them and see them with the naked eye, like bubbles in carbonated drinks, while some are used in technologies such as magnetic resonance imaging and less is known about them. Can you give us some processes in our daily life in which your gases and gas mixtures are used?

In addition to the already known aeration of water, juices and beer, we should mention some of the interesting applications of our gases, such as the use of helium in decorative balloons, the use of dry ice for stage effects for concerts and theaters, cooling in processes and wine production, oxygen and carbon dioxide for the treatment of drinking and wastewater, the use of nitrogen in the production of tires for the automotive industry and liquid nitrogen for cooling concrete in construction, as well as liquid helium for cooling magnets in magnetic resonance imaging in medical diagnostics. Today, one cannot imagine the work of modern petrochemical and refinery plants without the use of nitrogen for inertization, as well as the production of high-quality printed circuit boards in electronics without soldering in a protective nitrogen atmosphere. In metallurgy, oxygen is used for more efficient processes of combustion and melting of metals and refining in foundries, and nitrogen and argon in the processes of removing impurities in the production of various metal alloys.

  • The previous year was also a year for your company to change its business strategy “on the fly”, unpredictable situations, and sometimes forced business moves. What is the biggest challenge you face?

For the past year, Messer Tehnogas has been facing a challenge we have never faced before, it was necessary to meet the increased demands of medical institutions for medical oxygen and at the same time maintain the production of gases for the needs of the economy.

At the peak of the epidemic, we filled up to ten times more medical oxygen in bottles compared to the previous period.

All our capacities, both technological and human, were at the highest level. This posed multiple challenges for all our employees, working in three shifts, as well as on weekends and holidays.

After all, we can say that we have fulfilled the mission and we owe great gratitude for teamwork and sacrifice to all our employees, who have shown exceptional responsibility, and what has been confirmed once again is that good organization, teamwork and solidarity can be successfully realized and overcome the most demanding business challenges.

  • The effort and sacrifice of the medical staff during the pandemic would have been almost in vain if it were not for the basic thing – oxygen. Your experts have proven to be an important logistical support in the war with the crown. How else did you contribute to that fight?

In the treatment of kovida 19, every link of the health system is important – medical staff, pharmacists, drug manufacturers, wholesalers and others. Experience from the previous year tells us that only a well-organized system could withstand such challenges. Messer Tehnogas has four medical oxygen filling stations, which are located in Belgrade, Nis, Kraljevo and Novi Sad, as well as a plant for the production of liquid medical oxygen in Smederevo. In periods of intensified viral activity, when the number of patients and hospitalized was large, our factories worked at the highest technological level, and Messer’s team of experts of various educational profiles participated in the production and distribution process. With great dedication and responsibility, we have given support to hospitals in the fight against the crown.

In addition to the production of drugs – medical oxygen, our activities were also focused on expanding the capacity of substations for medical gases, making gas installations and purchasing equipment that was necessary for patients to receive appropriate oxygen therapy.

  • We are witnesses that environmental protection has become one of the very important topics, not only in the world but also in our country. How does Messer, as a company with a large number of production facilities and bottling plants, take care of quality, safety, health and environmental protection?

Our company is committed to developing, implementing and improving the efficiency of its occupational health and safety management systems, environmental protection and quality system, through entrepreneurial talent, far-sighted thinking and continuous improvement of its processes, thus ensuring long-term mutual success. As a member of the company, Messer takes social responsibility towards its employees, towards society, the environment and the quality of its products very seriously.

Given the large number of production plants and bottling plants, which are represented at seven locations in Serbia and one location in Montenegro, we have a person in charge of implementing requirements in these areas, and at the level of Messer Group there is a SHEQ service, which performs the tasks of organizing, coordinating and controlling the implementation of the subject activities at all the above locations.

  • What are the company’s priorities this year and in the coming period?

Messer Tehnogas is now returning to its regular business with full commitment to all sectors, as well as meeting their requirements and needs.

Our priority is the completion of the started investments, as well as the launch of new ones, which will help us in further development.


  • The growing interest in fresh and quality food products, which are less chemically treated – imposes on producers the task of prolonging the freshness of products without artificial additives and preservatives. How are gases used to preserve good quality and freshness of products?

Our company monitors and meets the increasingly stringent consumer requirements for the natural preservation of food quality, without additives and preservatives. Modified Atmosphere Packaging (MAP) is a special treatment of ready-made products that protects against oxidation of foods containing fats and aromatic substances, maintains the freshness of food, provides a longer shelf life without changing the taste and color. The modified atmosphere is the leading technology for preserving food products, which extends the shelf life of packaged products by two to five times, increasing the efficiency of production and distribution.

Rapid freezing of berries – the so-called shock freezing – with liquid nitrogen at extremely low temperatures does not allow the formation of large crystals inside the fruit cells, preserves the quality of the product, so that when you defrost this fruit, it looks like it is now harvested, with fully preserved cells. without juice leakage. The fruit can also be stored for a longer period in so-called controlled atmospheres, where nitrogen gas stores the fruit for months. By applying our “banana” gas for ripening bananas and tomatoes, the quantity of ripe products on the market is regulated. The packaging of water, non-carbonated beverages and oil is done by instilling liquid nitrogen, preventing oxidation of the product and stabilizing the packaging – the strength of the bottle or can. A layer of inert gas over wine or fruit juices protects these products from oxidation, preserving aroma and quality.
