To receive his mother’s pension, a man hides his corpse in their cellar

A 66-year-old man has just been arrested by Austrian police. For over a year, he had kept his mother’s corpse in the cellar of the house where he lived with her. The 89-year-old woman, who suffered from dementia, is believed to have died in mid-2020, as he admitted to authorities.

BBC tells that the man had placed his mother’s body in ice in order to slow down its decomposition and thus prevent odors from attracting the attention of the neighborhood. He also used bandages to absorb fluids, in what looks like a partial attempt at mummification.

More than 50,000 euros embezzled

The autopsy performed confirmed the natural character of the death of the old lady, thus preserved by her son for a very self-serving purpose. In more than a year, the man has embezzled the monthly pension received by his mother, for a total sum of nearly 50,000 euros. He explained his gesture by the fact that he had no income and that it would have been impossible for him to keep the house or pay for the funeral of the deceased.

During this entire period, the man also had to lie to his own brother. He had assured her that their mother had been hospitalized but that he was not advised to visit her, as she was no longer able to recognize anyone due to her failing sanity.

The pot aux roses was discovered when a freshly appointed local postal worker demanded to see the pension recipient in person. Faced with the refusal of his interlocutor, he ended up alerting the police, which led to the discovery of the body. The man was indicted for fraud and concealment of the body.
