To Kabardino-Balkaria on the new Volkswagen Taos

On July 7, 2021, Russia started accepting orders for the new Volkswagen Taos crossover. At the invitation of the company, we went to Kabardino-Balkaria to test the new car in various conditions.

The smallest crossover Volkswagen is the brother of the Skoda Karoq model, which we have already talked about. Cars are similar in many ways, but they also have differences.

Externally, the Volkswagen Taos turned out to be interesting, especially the designers succeeded in the front of the car, it looks brutal and quite fresh. At night, the crossover is highlighted by an active LED strip running from the headlights to the center, where the large logo is located. Just recently, because of such decisions, everyone laughed at the Koreans, and here the Germans also decided to beat the front optics and add decorative LED elements to it. But I didn’t really like the Taos feed, it looks like that of the Tiguan, and besides, it does not quite fit in with the new, slightly rounded front part. By the way, pay attention to the model name, which is located in Taos very strangely, under the number. This is an unusual solution for VW, and in my opinion, it would be better if they made it large and sweeping under the logo, like the Touareg.

The interior of the Taos looks pretty fresh, and from the Skoda Karoq brother, we see here only an unchanged dual-zone climate control unit. Passed into a junior crossover and a few solutions from Audi, now in VW on the front panel there is also a plastic “ski”, which can be of four colors, each for its own configuration. In my opinion, the panel looks neat and pretty, plus under it we have elements covered with artificial leather, which adds some status to the car. Like Karoq, Taos has a modest, but still atmospheric lighting, with which the interior looks more attractive at night.

The upholstery of the chairs is available only in fabric, but in texture and to the touch, it is quite pleasant, plus it is easy to clean. The seats themselves are comfortable, with the correct profile and good lateral support, you practically never get tired in them on long trips. In the highest trim levels, the driver’s seat is electrically adjustable, including lumbar support. For the front passenger seat, the adjustments are always mechanical.

The cabin can comfortably accommodate four adults, and even on the back sofa I sat absolutely free with a height of 187 cm, and to make it more comfortable, you can still fold down the central armrest. Despite such a spacious interior, the crossover also has a rather voluminous trunk of 500 liters (415 liters for the all-wheel drive version). For understanding, here is a photo of the luggage compartment of the front-wheel drive Taos, which contains my Xiaomi Metal Carry-on Luggage 20 ″, by the way, a very successful and reliable model. As you can see, there is more than enough space.

The luggage compartment door is electrically operated, but without the ability to immediately close the car with it.

Among the interesting innovations, it is worth noting the new VW Play media system based on Android OS with a 10-inch touchscreen. The display is not bad in quality, with a high resolution, quite responsive, but the oleophobic coating could be better. The new system is unusual and at first glance seems a little confusing, but in general you can get comfortable with it quickly enough. The advantage of VW Play is that you can install Android applications on it from the VW Play Apps store. Already, Waze navigation and online radio are available in it, and most importantly, “Yandex.Navigator” with integrated “Yandex.Music” and “Yandex.Fueling”. In the future, the number of useful applications in the store will increase. The same “Yandex.Navigator” installed on the system works quite quickly, which, of course, should please our compatriots. At the same time, the new VW Play media system also supports Android Auto and Apple CarPlay platforms, both by wire only, so you can use them too. For navigation and other online services to work, as well as installing applications, you need to connect Taos to an access point via Wi-Fi. In general, VW Play may not be ideal, but rather curious and requires a thorough study, which we will do later in Moscow, when we get Taos for the test.

In the cabin, at least in the top trim levels, we have four modern Type-C connectors available, two in the front and two in the back. But there is only one car outlet, in the front of the cabin.

In all trim levels, a virtual 8-inch dashboard is installed in the car, and in the top-end Exclusive it will already be 10 inches and with the ability to configure data on it and change the design. Data is read from the digital dashboard absolutely without problems in any lighting, since the screen is recessed deep into the panel and is covered with a visor.

There can also be a complete set of electronic driver assistants in Taos, there is also a rear-view camera with an average quality picture, but with a washer, parking sensors in a circle and a parking assistance system. There is a very good working adaptive cruise control with a traffic jam assistant, which complements the emergency braking system, as well as an assistant for keeping and guiding in the lane. And, of course, a blind spot monitoring system with bright visual indication.

In Russia, the new Volkswagen Taos crossover will be available with two gasoline engines. It is a 110 hp 1.6-liter naturally aspirated engine, mated only to a five-speed manual transmission and front-wheel drive. The second is a 1.4-liter turbocharged engine with 150 hp, which in front-wheel drive versions will be equipped with a conventional AQ300 8-speed automatic transmission. And cars with 4Motion all-wheel drive will only come with the DQ381 robotic 7-speed dual-clutch transmission.

I spent most of the test driving a front-wheel-drive crossover with an automatic transmission, such a car shows itself quite well in different conditions, the box smoothly and quickly engages the desired gear, and the engine power is enough for quiet overtaking even at the maximum permitted speed. In handling, the car is obedient, but the accuracy of the reactions is a little lacking, on a winding road it was necessary to decently reduce the speed to enter the turn. In motion, the Taos turned out to be a fairly quiet car, only on the track was a little annoying aerodynamic noise, coming, most likely, from the large side mirrors.

I also went to the mountains in a front wheel drive vehicle and had no problems driving on rocky roads. Yes, it is possible that it is a little easier to climb hills and some difficult sections on an all-wheel drive car in off-road mode, but a car with front-wheel drive is quite confident. In addition, such a car has a slightly higher ground clearance, which is declared by the manufacturer at 177 mm versus 175 mm for a car with 4Motion. By the way, in the all-wheel drive Taos, in which you can select the driving modes, everything is controlled entirely by electronics, and the assistance during the descent from the mountain is sewn into the “Off-road” program and does not help much, since the car rolls only on the road. In general, the Volkswagen Taos is more of an urban crossover, on which, if necessary, you can drive off the asphalt without much fear, but I think that most of the buyers will not go further than a country dirt road on it.

I also liked the work of the Taos suspension, which dampens most of the irregularities, giving into the cabin only a collision with a large ledge or pothole at speed. On an ordinary road, you will be very comfortable, but on off-road, of course, it will shock you a little, but it is quite tolerable.

Fuel consumption cannot be called very small, that a front-wheel drive car, that an all-wheel drive car on the highway consumed about 8.5-9 liters of fuel per 100 km. With a manufacturer’s declared consumption of 7 liters (8 liters for 4Motion) per 100 km.

Prices for the new Volkswagen Taos crossover in our market start at 1,626,900 rubles, the average configuration with an automatic transmission will cost 1,906,900 rubles, and the maximum will cost 2,099,900 rubles. For the all-wheel drive version, you will have to pay about 100,000 rubles. For metallic, you need to throw another 18,500 rubles, and there are also additional useful options and equipment packages, for which you will also have to pay. In general, Volkswagen has turned out to be a solid urban crossover, which is more interesting in terms of noise insulation and smoothness than its counterpart from Skoda, but costs not much more.

Finally, I suggest you admire the beauty of Kabardino-Balkaria, photos were taken on Apple iPhone 12 mini and Google Pixel 4a:
