A little hidden finesse in Android is the ability to give selected conversations, not contacts, high priority. The feature is not available in all interfaces and Android versions but should be here in newer systems: settings > notifications > conversations.
On that page, current conversations from different messaging apps, such as WhatsApp, are listed, whether they are conversations with individuals or conversations in groups. When a conversation is given higher priority, the system will highlight new messages from that person or group to a greater extent.
The person’s or group’s profile picture is displayed as an icon in the status bar (see image below) when there is a new message. The profile picture is also displayed on the lock screen. Not everyone benefits from the finesse, but it can be used for conversations we don’t want to accidentally miss new posts from.
