Tile launches tracking tag with Ultra Wideband technology

Since 2012, Tile has manufactured and specialized in tracking washers. They are attached to any gadget the user wants to keep track of and can then, with the help of Bluetooth and an application, help locate the object if it gets lost. As Bluetooth has a limited range, Tile devices also use “Crowd-GPS”, where the entire network is used by users to anonymously transmit location information.

Recently, Tile was joined by two new challengers, Apple Airtag and Samsung Smart Tag. Both combine similar Bluetooth-based features with Ultra Wideband Radio (UWB) wireless technology and augmented reality to simplify tracking. Now Tile also takes the step to UWB and presents a new generation consisting of five new Tiles and a redesigned application.

Common to all is longer range with Bluetooth connection, dust and water resistance corresponding to enclosure class IP67 and increased volume of the audio signal. All new devices with the exception of the Sticker have also been added a unique QR code on the back. Between Mate, Slim and Sticker, it is above all the form factor that differs, where the Tile Sticker stands out somewhat with a back covered in tape.

All three have a battery life specified of about three years, but the battery is not replaceable. When it is finished, the whole unit needs to be replaced. Tile Pro is the most powerful and differs slightly from the other three. The range over Bluetooth is a total of 120 meters and the replaceable battery is estimated to last for about a year.

As the application looks at the moment, different Tile users do not have direct contact with each other. The “Lost and Found” feature will make it easier to reunite users with their items by making it possible to set up a message linked to the QR code on the back of a Tile. A finder can then be provided with contact information if they read the QR code.

In addition to this, there is also the new security function “Scan and Secure”. With this, the user can search the environment himself with his phone to discover any Tile devices within range and whether they are unknown devices. The function will be developed in collaboration with organizations that specialize in helping people exposed to violence in close relationships and will be available until the end of 2021.

All devices and the application work for both Android and iOS. Tile Pro, Mate, Slim and Sticker are available on Tile’s website and at retailers with a price from SEK 259. Tile Ultra will be launched together with the “Point and Locate” function at the beginning of 2022 at an as yet unknown price.
