Roger Onave was sentenced on Tuesday by the Saint-Étienne criminal court to three years in prison, including 18 months with probationary suspension for two years, for fraud and exercise of a commercial or industrial profession despite a judicial ban. He will also have the obligation to compensate the victims to the tune of approximately 645,000 euros.
The 70-year-old man was a prominent figure in Saint-Étienne: former manager of a major construction company, involved in the tourist office and an association supporting medical research.
About fifty victims
He was tried on June 22 following complaints from around fifty victims, some of whom belonged to the Stéphanois gratin. These had been requested by Roger Onave for a real estate project approached in La Talaudière, but which never saw the light of day. They had been relieved of sums ranging from 5,000 to 50,000 euros, the total damage approaching one million euros.
At the trial, the prosecutor asked for three years in prison, two of which are closed. And a deferred deposit warrant. Roger Onave had already been imprisoned at the end of last year, for having violated his judicial control.
