Three schools in Martorell gain energy by saving with the 50/50 project

Last year, Martorell City Council signed an agreement with the Lola Anglada, José Echegaray and Juan Ramon Jiménez schools to carry out the 50/50 energy saving project. This program, which has the support of the Diputació de Barcelona, consists of returning to schools in the form of a subsidy 50% of the energy savings they make on the average cost of energy consumed in previous years.

The 50/50 project aims to encourage the reduction of energy consumption in schools, from the application of good practices in the use and management of energy by students, teachers, cleaning staff and concierge , financially offsetting this savings with the award of a direct grant.

City Council technicians are analyzing the bills to determine the savings achieved during the 2020-2021 academic year, taking as a reference the average consumption from 2016 to 2019. The total amounts received by the school under the agreement are they will be used to carry out workshops or environmental education activities related to saving, energy efficiency or climate change during the current school year.

The Lola Anglada School, for example, will spend part of the money on guided tours of the exhibition Let’s Act with Energy, which can be visited until November 7 in the lobby of the Espai Jove Punt Nord, on the occasion of the European Week of Sustainable Energy.

In October last year, the project facilitator presented it to the energy team formed in each school and made an inspection of the entire building to assess aspects that influence energy consumption and make a reflection on the possible management improvements. They also took the opportunity to train with the cleaning and concierge staff.

During the months of March and May, two energy saving workshops were held with each group of 5th graders from José Echegaray and 6th graders from Lola Anglada and Juan Ramon Jiménez. Students learned the importance of saving energy to combat climate change. In addition, they developed an action plan to save energy in the center, signaled the switches to make clear the priority of turning on the lights and disseminated good practices through videos recorded by the students themselves.
