Differentiate real from fake with Google Fact Check
If you ever scroll through social media, you will probably be familiar with people who repost or share news items on their stories. These can be things that are obviously fake, but sometimes such posts still leave you in doubt.
Was the photo of the five-foot giant man real? And is it true that climate change is simply caused by the sun? In this article we explain how you can get started with the Google Fact Check Explorer.
Google Fact Check Explorer
The Google Fact Check Explorer is part of the Google Fact Check Tools. These are various online services that contribute to discovering and checking news. You can find Google’s Fact Check Tools at toolbox.google.com/factcheck. For this article, we turn our attention to the Explorer, aka the search bar for fake news.
At first glance, the Explorer looks very similar to Google’s regular search engine. With the search bar you will find topics that you want to see a check. You do this by typing in a subject or the name of the party that published about it. Want to search for a topic on a specific site? Then type ‘site:’ followed by the website. This way your search is even more specific.

Among the search results are all checked news that match your search. At the top of a result you will find the message of the (fake) news.
Below that is an assessment by an independent party. It is indicated here whether a piece of news is false or partly false, together with a small explanation. You can easily click through to the extensive factcheck.
View recent verified facts
Have you recently come across some dubious news? Then there is a good chance that it has been checked and can be found on the Google Fact Check Explorer. Go to the web page and take a look recent fact checks.
Here too you will first see the alleged news with an explanation about the reliability below. At the top right of the screen you also select which language the sources may be. You can choose from Dutch, English or all languages.

If you ever come across news online, always check it. Even if the source is a reputable news party. In the Explorer you can find a lot of examples of manipulated messages with the logo of a RTL News of NOS there. So always use common sense.
