Rising wheat prices on international markets are expected to force domestic mills to raise the price of flour, which will also affect bakers’ products.
This year’s domestic wheat harvest was good in terms of quantity, but weaker than usual in terms of quality, which is compounded by the fact that there was a significant decrease in yields in Europe this summer. As a result, there was a shortage in the French, English and even Romanian markets, which beat the price of wheat.
The vice president of the Grain Association told the ATV newsletter:
a 7-10 per cent increase in flour is forced by the profession to maintain viability. This means an increase of about 6-8 forints, and an increase of more than 500 forints annually – said Zoltán Lakatos.
The newsletter was also addressed by the owner of Diti Bakery, who said that not only the price of flour but also other products had risen, so they could not eliminate the increase. “We will be forced to pass this burden on to our customers,” he said.
