This is how Madrid looks from space after the storm Filomena

January 12, 2021

In black and white you can see the color image of Madrid from space in the Photograph taken by the Sentinel-2 satellite of the Copernicus system of the European Space Agency (ESA) after the great snowfall fell on the capital at the weekend when the storm Filomena passed.

The image was taken this monday by one of the two satellites that are part of the mission once the storm had passed. However, this capture shows that there is still a lot of snow left even after the storm has passed, especially on the outskirts of the city.

The photo appears to be taken in black and white, but nevertheless it is a real color image, although the landscape looks white due to the largest snowfall in the region in 50 years.

In the copy provided by ESA it can be seen how some of the airport runways (in the upper right part of the image) they are still covered with snow, as well as roads and train tracks, details the ESA in a statement.

Very low temperatures

From ESA they point out that the main concern currently is clean the city’s roads in order to supply it with basic products such as food and vaccines for the covid but, they point out, that temperatures continue to be exceptionally low throughout the week, reaching -12ºC.

The mission in charge of taking the photograph, the Copernicus Sentinel-2, is made up of two satellites with a high-resolution camera each that photographs the Earth’s surface in 13 spectral bands.

Every five days both satellites cover the entire land surface, the largest islands, and the coastal and continental waters closest to the equator.
