They can ban Samsung smartphones from Russia

In a October 19 ruling, the Moscow Arbitration Court banned the local subsidiary of Samsung Electronics from selling a total of 61 different types of smartphones, the Russian news agency TASZSZ reported. The prohibition is the result of a patent infringement lawsuit, as well as the clarification and supplementation of an earlier judgment with exactly which types the order applies to.

The ominous lawsuit was filed against Samsung by a Swiss m-payment provider, SQWIN SA, because the South Korean company used the company’s Russian-registered patents on its own payment solution, Samsung Pay, without permission.

The trial court delivered its judgment at first instance on 27 July, but SQWIN appealed to the Board to specifically identify the types involved. This list has now been completed, and the 61 models involved include both the company’s current top models (e.g., Galaxy S21 Ultra 5G) as well as older models introduced years ago (e.g., Galaxy S8).

The current decision of the court is not final either, the parties have one month to file an appeal, the distribution of Samsung smartphones can legally continue in Russia until the entry into force of the second instance judgment.
