The restrictions refer to four chemicals in food that can have a negative effect on the immune system, the development of embryos and babies, or serum cholesterol, Brussels said.
The new provisions limit levels of perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS), perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), perfluorononanoic acid (PFNA) and perfluorohexane sulfonic acid (PFHxS).
Today we have taken a new step towards improving food safety in the EU, the European Commissioner for Health and Food Safety said when adopting the new rules Stela Kyriakides. As she added, the European Commission puts citizens’ health first with the new rules. “This is always our priority,” summed up the commissioner in a press release.
The new rules will come into force in the new year.
