There are many complaints about the construction industry today, but the GVH will be tough

The Office of Economic Competition (GVH) is receiving more and more complaints about the construction industry, the competition authority said, promising tough action against cartel operators and other companies that committed irregularities.

Complaints related to drastic price increases and other harmful market developments continue to be given high priority by the national competition authority. According to their announcement, the increased number of signals related to the construction industry indicates serious problems in the affected market, consumers and companies mostly perceive the problems in the retail market, ie at the level of building material traders and fires, which are related to recent price increases.

According to the complaints, some products may have been in short supply in some places, and trades are trying to pass on the risks of rapid changes in purchase prices to customers. The rise in prices could have reduced customers’ complaints, frequent prepayment of the full purchase price and faulty performance, the statement said.

The evaluation of the signals received by the competition authority is ongoing, and it can be seen that many consumers and businesses are concerned about the trends affecting the construction market.

Balázs Csaba Rigó, President of the Hungarian Competition Authority, emphasized in the statement that clean and fair competition in the market of construction raw materials is of paramount importance. Material prices, which sometimes rise inexplicably, must not be allowed to worsen consumer welfare at the national level, hinder the Hungarian people in home creation and renovation programs, and hinder investment.

The construction industry is one of the engines of the Hungarian economy, all its anomalies must be revealed as quickly and thoroughly as possible, as it can have a huge impact on the country’s momentum – said Balázs Rigó Csaba.

At the end of May, the GVH initiated a market consultation with the National Trade Union of Construction Contractors, after which it set up a special investigation team to explore the causes of the drastic rise in construction raw material prices. A working group of the Authority’s experts will give priority to analyzing complaints and signals from the market related to suspected cartel activities. In addition, proceedings are pending against the three most important players in the domestic cement market in October 2020 for alleged violations of the prohibition on the abuse of a dominant position, the GVH informed.
