There are 10 possible causes of calf pain

The calf pain can become so severe that it can even impede walking. According to Dr. Zoltán Páll, a surgeon, traumatologist and sports doctor at the Buda Pain Center, the medical diagnosis is also important because there are many reasons behind it, from muscle stretching to vascular problems.

The most common reasons

  1. Muscle cramp
This problem is typically temporary, although it can cause significant pain. It can develop due to excessive physical exertion, weak muscles, dehydration, lack of stretch, and electrolyte deficiency due to sweating.
  2. Izomhúzódás
Muscle strain is an injury resulting from the overstretching and overstretching of muscles, which very often occurs during sports and physical activity, although it can also be the result of a bad movement. It is typically accompanied by sharp, severe pain.
  3. Arterial claudication
Calf pain can also be caused by narrowing or blocking the blood vessels that carry blood to the legs. It is also called limb fatigue or intermittent limping, which occurs even after a small load. It can develop up to cramping pain, but disappears after the leg is loaded. It typically occurs over the age of 50-60 years, and is typically characterized by rapid or gradual muscle pain that results in only short-term walking.
  4. Neurogenic spinal calcification (spinal limb)
This problem is most common as a symptom of lumbar spinal stenosis. The stenosis causes pressure on the caudal fibers and / or nerve radicals in the spinal canal. Circulatory insufficiency caused by decreased blood supply and compression of the venous system is a cause of pain. In addition to cramps, morning lower limb numbness may be a symptom. limb weakness while walking, narrowing of walking distance, and severe gait disturbance in advanced cases. It is also common for progress to reduce complaints.
  5. Achilles tendonitis
In case of gingivitis, the calf feels stiff in the morning after waking up, and the Achilles tendon itself may be sensitive. Emild, local pain after treatment may also be a problem, especially if it gets stronger over time. Inflammation of the Achilles tendon is common, especially in those who are just starting to exercise or performing repetitive movements, which may be indicated by swelling and thickening.
  6. Compartment syndrome
Acompartment syndrome is a painful and severe condition that causes bleeding or swelling inside a space enclosed by muscles. High tissue pressure reduces circulation and tissue function – resulting in pain, numbness, and tingling. The condition can be acute, such as a serious injury, and can be chronic, which is often the case it develops on the ground of sports load. The affected limb must be rested and medical treatment is unavoidable.
  7. Diabetic neuropathy
(Poly) neuropathy is damage to the peripheral nerves that does not usually appear as a stand-alone disease but in connection with some metabolic disease. However, this is it can be not only diabetes but also kidney disease, thyroid disease, vitamin deficiency or alcoholism. In the vast majority of cases, the symptoms occur in the lower extremities, and numbness mainly affects the legs and calves, although it also occurs in the arms. After numbness, a burning, numbing, stinging pain can develop, which is unbearable, especially at night.
  8. Inflammation of the soles of the feet
The heel spur and the so-called plantalisfasciitis (inflammation of the plantar fascia) often results in pain. The problem can also be caused by goosebumps and overload, especially those who put a heavy strain on their heels, such as runners, athletes, dancers. The pain occurs on the sole of the sole, primarily at the heel on the inside of the sole, but can also extend to the calf. Especially in the morning, after rest, or during exercise, symptoms worsen.
  9. Varicose veins
Varicose veins are a genetically induced condition with a number of predisposing factors, from pregnancy to hormonal changes or even obesity. In some cases, the problem also causes accusation pain.
  10. Deep vein thrombosis
It can cause severe pain if a blood clot forms in a vein – a problem that needs immediate care, of course.

Treatment at home and at the doctor

– In milder cases, it is worth resorting to already known homework practices. The RICE method applies to the following: R-rest, I-ice, C-compression, E-elevation. and pulling the toes toward the body. At the same time it is worth learning the routine of professional and regular stretching from a sports doctor, coach, movement therapist, especially if the prosecution problem has occurred more than once – emphasizes dr. Zoltán Páll, surgeon of the Buda Pain Center, traumatologist, sports doctor. – In the case of non-acute and non-acute illnesses, the sports doctor can help with other methods, including soft tissue hyaluronic acid injection or shock wave therapy. However, it is primarily the exact diagnosis that makes it necessary to consult a specialist, as this is the only way to start professional treatment.
