The murder of Bobbie Jo Stinnett caused the whole United States to be appalled.
Lisa Montgomery tricked the pregnant 23-year-old into thinking she could buy a dog. Instead, Montgomery strangled Stinnett – and cut her baby out of her womb. Read more about the murder here.
The punishment was death – and on Wednesday, the execution was carried out with a lethal injection at the Terre Haute prison in India. Montogomery then became the first woman to be executed federally at age 67.

Torture and abuse
But what made Montgomery commit such a bestial murder? And was she really in full use of her senses when she did?
Several testify that this was not the case. Both lawyers and family members have said that Montgomery was mentally ill.
Montogomery’s half-sister Diane Mattingly jumped into the last on a pardon. The two lived together until Mattingly was eight and Montogomery four.
Mattingly describes the home as a nightmare where they were subjected to physical, mental and sexual abuse by the mother Judy Shaughnessy and her boyfriend.
“Had someone stepped in”
The girls’ father had left them early and after a few years Mattingly was sent to a foster home – left alone Montgomery.
– One sister was taken away and ended up in a home full of love and had time to heal, the other sister stayed and it got worse and worse. In the end, she was completely broken, Mattingly tells the BBC and continues:
– If someone had stepped in then this would never have happened. You did not know Lisa’s name.
She often protected her sister from domestic abuse, but in 1972, when the social worker moved her from her home in Kansas, the then four-year-old Montgomery was left to her fate.
– I did not understand why I was taken from home, but Lisa was left behind. I thought they knew about the rapes. I thought they knew about the beating. I thought they knew about the torture Judy was doing, the sister says Vice.
The abuses escalated. The stepfather built an isolated room where the girl was held captive, raped and monitored. Men other than the stepfather were also invited to rape her.
At age 18, Montgomery married his stepbrother and had four children aged five. But the marriage did not become an escape from the violence – it became a continuation.
During this period, Montgomery began to disappear into her own world – the beginning of the mental illness she was heading into.
She also suffered from bipolar disorder, post-traumatic stress and brain damage because her mother drank heavily during pregnancy.
After a few years, Montgomery divorced her husband and married a new guy, Kevin Montgomery. She then claimed that she was pregnant several times, even though she was sterilized.
The fantasies of getting pregnant, combined with the fact that she was afraid that her new husband would understand that she was lying, probably led to Montgomery feeling extremely pressured and even more psychotic.
This is believed to be the reason why she eventually became so desperate for a child that she was prepared to murder.
Since 2015, there have been 16 similar cases in the US where women killed pregnant women and then stole their babies, writes BBC. None of the perpetrators have been sentenced to death – except Montgomery.
