Former Zengő driver Norbert Michelisz started this year’s WTCR season with a fifth place finish at the Nürburgring, but Zengő Motorsport did not start the season well.

Of Saturday’s two races in the first round of the season, champion Michelisz (Hyundai), who was in second place in 2019, finished fifth, while Tassi (Honda) finished fourth in the second race. The third Hungarian rider of the field, Bence Boldizs, who leads the Zengő Motorsport Cup, finished 19th in the first race and 13th in the second race, but surprisingly only the young driver managed to score.

At Zengő Motorsport, which was struggling with technical problems throughout the weekend, the pilots performed far below expectations. In the first race Robert Huff, the second Mikel Azcona finished in last place, Boldizs 13th place was the best performance from the team on the Nordschleife.

They continue in Estoril

The first race of the season was won by Portuguese Tiago Monteiro with Honda, while in the second race, Frenchman Jean-Karl Vernay (Hyundai) triumphed. The first female scorer in the history of the WTCR was Jessica Bäckman of Sweden, who finished fourth behind Boldizs in the second race with Hyundai.

In the composite, after his first race weekend, Vernay leads with 39 points, followed by Monteiro with a second of 33, while Argentina’s Nestor Girolami (Honda) is also third with 33 points. Of the Hungarians, Tassi is the eighth (17 points), Michelisz the 12th (11) and Boldizs the 16th (3). The second round of the 2021 season of the WTCR will be held in Estoril, Portugal, on June 26-27.
