The White Sea exhibition hall is accused of racism – may change its name

The art college students have organized themselves in the artist collective Brown Island, reports Swedens radio.

From there, the anti-racist struggle to remove “White” from the “White Sea” is now being waged.

Sara Kristoffersson, professor at Konstfack, believes, however, that the students have not understood the history behind the name.

– The point is that Brown Island has proposed a name change of the White Sea. Fighting racism is important, but I object to wanting to rewrite history and ignore facts. The name of the venue does not derive in any way from racist thinking or the concept of “white cube” which is common in the art world, says Sara Kristoffersson to SR.

The name White Sea originated when the art school was located in central Stockholm in the middle of the 20th century. There, a large and bright hall was created by demolishing walls. When the school later moved, the name followed, writes SR.
