Washington has held talks with several international energy companies on plans to supply natural gas to Europe in case of unforeseen circumstances if the Russia-Ukraine conflict disrupts Russia’s natural gas supplies.

This was reported Reuters citing two U.S. officials and energy sources.

Representatives of the State Department asked the companies where additional gas supplies could come from. U.S. officials have been investigating whether the companies have the resources to export and, if necessary, postpone on-site maintenance.

The companies told US officials that “global gas supplies are limited and that available gas is not enough to replace large volumes from Russia.”

It is unclear which companies were contacted by US officials.

A spokesman for the US Security Council did not comment on negotiations with energy companies, but confirmed that “contingency planning is underway.”

“The United States has promised to support Europe if there is a need for energy through conflict or sanctions,” said another interlocutor.

Amos Hochstein’s adviser to the Secretary of State on energy security plans to visit large liquefied natural gas companies in Qatar in the near future, Reuters was told.

The threat of a full-scale Russian attack on Ukraine: what is known

Since November 2021, the international community has been concerned about the alarming movement of Russian troops along Ukraine’s border, which looks like preparations for a full-scale offensive against the country.

According to Western intelligence, Putin may involve 100,000 troops in the attack on Ukraine, and the invasion may take place in the winter of 2022.

Due to the risk of escalation on the Russian-Ukrainian border, US President Joe Biden has repeatedly talked with Russian President Vladimir Putin, but this has not helped reduce tensions.

Against the background of the threat of another attack, Putin demanded that Ukraine not join NATO, which the Kremlin called “security guarantees.” Russia claims that Allied forces in Eastern Europe are threatening its national security.

On this occasion, a series of meetings between representatives of Russia, the United States and NATO took place in Brussels, as a result of which Moscow’s ultimatum was rejected. Against the background of the failure of the Russian Foreign Ministry, the West is already being blackmailed into a “difficult scenario” for Ukraine. Thus, the Kremlin allegedly wants to force Kyiv to implement the “Minsk agreements”.
