One man’s garbage is another man’s treasure, we have always said that.
Now, in Seoul, some students have begun to reevaluate waste like never before, thanks to the invention of a toilet that composes human excrement and transforms it into methane biogas for use in the school’s energy system, and which will allow them to receive a digital currency every time the toilet is used.
The idea comes from Cho Jae-weon, a professor of urban and environmental engineering at l’Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology (UNIST), which insists that humanity can solve all kinds of problems if we think “Outside the box”.
Called Toilet BeeVi, the toilet-compost-currency uses a powerful vacuum to pull the feces down into a composting tank, thus eliminating all water consumption. Subsequently, the bacteria break down the stool and the methane is funneled into a cell solid oxide fuel which powers various functions of the building.
On average, a human’s daily droppings can generate about 0.5 kilowatt hours of electricity.
Together with BeeVi, Professor Cho has created a digital token, called “Ggool” (honey in Korean), which will allow students to earn money using the bathroom. Each time they use the bathroom they will receive 10 Ggool through the app. The money received can be spent on coffee and other food in the school canteen.
Here is a video presentation of the BeeVi:
