La Colla company premieres

The Martorell theater company La Colla is one of the three finalist projects for the Josep Clusa Awards 2021, organized by The Other Festival. The event aims to recognize shows, projects or companies that aim to achieve the well-being and inclusion of people with or without mental health problems through the performing arts, to raise awareness of the reality of mental health from a positive outlook, and to promote diversity and accessibility in the art world.

The Colla, born 10 years ago and formed two years ago as a theater group, is currently made up of 11 members. The company emerged from a workshop of the Social Club Meeting Point of theBaix Llobregat Nord Mental Health Association to improve social and communication skills. Some participants were excited to take on the challenge of forming the group to break stigmas.

The director of the company La Colla, Alícia Zamora, explains that “it is still a community space, without labels, where we all share the same desire, to transform the environment in which we live through theater”.

“We think we are doing a very interesting social work, which deserves to be recognized. The boys and girls are especially excited, as they see that they have a space where what they say matters and how they say it, ”explains the director. “It’s interesting to talk about mental health, put it at the center of everything and ask ourselves about the prejudices we have.” The resolution of the Josep Clusa Awards is expected to arrive before next January and, during these weeks, an independent jury will decide which project will be the winner.

The company wants to launch several projects in the coming months. For La Marató de TV3, which this year is dedicated to mental health, they will perform a small play, together with the Aula de Teatre de Martorell. “We have worked on a dynamic that questions the population about the issues that most concern them in the field of mental health. In addition, they will carry out an action with the Punt de Trobada Social Club to break stigmas and not forget their origins, and a theatrical project that will see the light at the end of June to raise funds for the Pallapupes ”, points out Zamora.
