The symptoms of the delta variant resemble the common cold – Human – Science and Technology

The more infectious delta variant of Covid-19 spreads not only significantly faster, but may also manifest itself in part with other symptoms.

Experience and studies from countries where the delta variant is already widespread show that the symptoms of this variant are more similar to influenza, rhinitis or allergies. Typical is headache, sore throat, nasal secretions and fever or fever. This can often lead people to believe that this is just a common cold, the Ministry of Health states on its Facebook page.

Loss of taste and smell may not be such a common manifestation. Another symptom can be diarrhea. Delta variants also infect younger people more often, who may underestimate the milder symptoms and spread the disease further.

Diagnosis of the delta variant only on the basis of symptoms in humans, where there is no history of contact, is not possible and the disease will be ruled out or confirmed only by RT-PCR test. “For symptoms similar to common respiratory diseases, testing certainly clarifies the diagnosis,” said Adriana Šimková, the chief expert of the Ministry of Health of the Slovak Republic for general medicine.

In the summer it is common that people have e.g. rhinitis, headache caused by staying in excessively cold air-conditioned areas when they are hot outside. If the disease is suspected, it is necessary to contact a doctor, isolate and undergo an RT-PCR test. The delta variant differs from the hitherto dominant alpha variant only by subsequent sequencing.
