The Swedish Tax Agency’s requirement: “Postpone the increase in the benefit value”

The increase in the benefit value on 1 July may be postponed at the Tax Agency’s request.

The government wants together with the Liberals and the Center Party raise the benefit value on 1 July. For many car models, the increase is around 30 percent. Already at the turn of the year, the benefit value for many green cars was increased by SEK 10,000.

The proposal is still out for consultation, but the Swedish Tax Agency has already replied, states Dagens PS. Director General Katrin Westling Palm writes:

“The date of entry into force of the law should be postponed to January 1, 2022 to avoid different valuation rules during the same tax year and to give employers, software companies and authorities more time to adapt routines and systems.”

“Lower the benefit value for environmental reasons”

The interest organization Bil Sweden proposes instead a reduction of the benefit value by SEK 30,000 for rechargeable cars and by SEK 15,000 for gas cars. They believe that it would benefit the environment.

– We understand the government’s argumentation about equalizing the cost of owning a privately owned car versus a company car. But we must remember that it is the company car market that drives technology development and accelerates the transition to electrification. Without electrification, we will not achieve our climate goals, Mattias Bergman continues.

He points out that just over 32 per cent of all passenger cars registered in 2020 were rechargeable cars, which is the best in the EU.
