Cairo – The Suez Canal, which connects the Mediterranean and the Red Sea, last year increased sales by 12.8 percent to $ 6.3 billion (about 139 billion), the most in the history of this important artery of world trade. With reference to the canal administration, the AP agency informed about it today.

Last year, 20,649 vessels passed through the waterway, which is an increase of ten percent compared to the previous year. The Suez Canal experienced a dramatic event last year when the 400-meter-long container ship Ever Given stranded in March. The canal was then blocked for six days.

The Suez Canal was opened in 1869 and currently accounts for about ten percent of world trade, including seven percent of global oil supplies.
