The story of a man in his twenties who was caught escaping from a white soil kyohwaso and branded as a ‘traitor’

In January 2020, Kim, in her 20s, who was caught while fleeing from a correctional center in Sinuiju, died of torture, but it is known that the correctional center treated him as suicide and received criticism from the residents. /Graphic = Daily NK

Suicide is strictly prohibited in North Korea. The suicide behavior of correctional workers (prison inmates) who are being tried and sentenced is even more problematic.

In North Korea, if an ordinary citizen commits suicide, he regards the resident as a traitor to the state, and if a reformer commits suicide, he or she will not be able to wash away all the sins he has committed against the country and will follow the family register for the rest of his life. Put the traitor’s scab on it. It means that they have to live in pain under political oppression from generation to generation.

As such, there have been cases where the state security agency maliciously manipulated suicide, which the state considers an act of treason, to cover up their brutal human rights violations and torture.

After fleeing from the Baekto Correctional Center in Sinuiju in January 2020, a male correctionalist in his 20s, who was heading to his hometown of Sujin-ri, Uiju-gun, hid in a remote valley three days after escaping from the correctional center in Sinuiju. He suffered a piercing wound to his leg and lost consciousness.

Kim, who was born in Uiju, was unusually short compared to his peers from a young age and jumped into smuggling without enlisting in the military. .

He lost his mind and woke up in a prison cell in a cold iron cage at the Shinuiju Correctional Center, and his right leg, which had suffered heavy bleeding from a penetrating wound, was left without any treatment or first aid.

Previously, Mr. Kim was told through the whole family of his colleagues at the kyohwaso that his grandfather collapsed when he heard the news of his departure and that he did not know when he would die. So, he begged the security guard in charge to inform him of the situation in his house. However, the words that came back were, ‘Shut up the prisoner and focus on carrying out the punishment task’ and ‘What you have committed is your family’s fault, so it is cheap even if you die’.

Therefore, Kim was aiming for an opportunity to escape every day, even risking his life to see his grandfather at least once before he closed his eyes. He had been smuggling and was well-versed in the terrain, but he escaped the site when he was mobilized for external construction work, and was eventually caught within a few days.

The security guards in charge of Mr. Kim’s escape were ruthless, such as trampling on the leg of the gunshot wounded man. In this way, the correctional center forcibly received a false confession that it attempted to illegally cross the border into Sujin-ri, Uiju, through Road No. 123.

Even the head of the kyohwaso ordered him to ‘make him die if he doesn’t die’, and the security guards below tortured Mr. Kim, who had suffered from high fever from gunshot wounds every night, by hanging him upside down naked. In the end, Kim died in prison on the 11th day after he was caught after suffering hard labor.

Immediately, the Shinuiju kyohwaso treated the case of Kim, in his 20s, who died after torture, as a victim of guilt after escaping and taking his own life in the trial room of the kyohwaso.

The prison guards and prisoners were silenced to prevent rumors about Mr. Kim, but the custodians’ families who knew about the incident and the residents who had left after serving their sentences did not talk about the atrocities of the correctional center. As a result, the incident went viral as a ‘strange story’.

However, the truth of Kim’s death is still buried. His family register was labeled as ‘a traitor who took his life without being able to wash away his sins ungratefully due to the consideration of the Republic and the Marshal who paved the way for regeneration’.

However, residents who are aware of this fact say, ‘It was torture and death, but it was treated as suicide and branded as a traitor.’ Wouldn’t that be okay?” he slammed the correctional center’s treatment.
