In the current situation, the state of emergency would end on Friday. Most government anti-coronavirus restrictions depend on it. It is also possible to deploy soldiers to help, for example, in health care and homes for the elderly. The Cabinet will extend the state of emergency and the validity of anti-epidemic measures on Friday. It should also discuss a revised table of restrictions linked to the anti-epidemic PES system.
The KSČM’s proposal to extend the state of emergency for another 23 days received the support of 53 of the 98 deputies present. There were 19 against them. Members of YES, CSSD and KSCM voted in favor of the proposal. The legislators of the other parties voted against or abstained.
Deputies no longer voted on the government’s proposal or the proposal of the opposition Pirates to extend the state of emergency from Friday, February 5. Both proposals received less support in the previous orientation vote. The pirates did not enforce the nine-point resolution, which concerned, for example, support for disabled entrepreneurs, an increase in sick pay for people in quarantine, or isolation and the possibility of opening schools. It was a condition for them to vote for a longer state of emergency.
The communists also set conditions, such as the wider opening of schools and the operation of winter resorts and accommodation services, which now do not work due to government anti-coronavirus restrictions. The Minister of Health Jan Blatný (YES) told the deputies that the entire first stage of primary schools could be opened at the beginning of February at the earliest and the ski lifts could be resumed at the turn of January and February, if the epidemic situation allows.
The all-day debate was accompanied by a physical conflict between the non-attached Member Lubomír Volný and some other legislators. It was created after the chairman Tomáš Hanzel (ČSSD) turned off the microphone to Volný and the non-attached deputy subsequently demanded the completion of the entry directly from the presidency. The Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies, Radek Vondráček (YES), expelled Volný from the Chamber after the conflict, and the Member is apparently awaiting disciplinary proceedings.
The state of emergency applies during the current wave of the epidemic from 5 October. The current government request was the fifth in a row. In the spring, the state of emergency in the Czech Republic due to the coronavirus crisis lasted 66 days. The current one will last at least 132 days after the government’s decision.
