The village of Fuentes de Andalucía in southern Spain was renamed Ukraine (after Spanish Ucraniu) to show its solidarity with the war-torn country of the same name, which invaded Russia. The agency informs about it on Saturday Reuters.

The change in the name is announced by the marker when entering the village. The new name is also painted Ukrainian blue-yellow flag. The streets there were also renamed, which are called Kiev, Odessa or Mariupol.

More than a symbolic gesture

“The main goal is to raise awareness of the conflict in Ukraine, but also to show where (on which side) the country stands in the war,” he told the agency Reuters the mayor of this village Francisco Martínez standing on a street called the City of Kiev (Cuidad de Kiev).

Martinez said changing the village’s name was more than a symbolic gesture. He added that the locals had collected 3,500 euros in just two days for the construction of the planned refugee center. According to him, the village wants to offer a home to 25 Ukrainian refugees, either through accommodation in the center or with locals.
