The smart grille is coming to cars. Here’s how it works

During the digital edition of the CES in Las Vegas 2021, Magna International, one of the most important companies specialized in the production of automotive components, presented the HALF Panel. It is a highly configurable and adaptable front panel in different sizes, even in 3D form, composed of thin layers of injection-molded plastic.

The goal is to offer the car manufacturers a new grille that integrates not only the advanced components of the ADAS systems (radar, camera and sensors) and the future autonomous driving but also a distinctive character for the different brands thanks to the integration of technologies. own lighting.

Cutting-edge materials

To achieve the set objectives, Magna has focused on innovative materials, exploiting the knowledge gained in the development of previous technologies such as the LUMI Grille with FlecsForm.

The new grille is able to meet the needs of electric vehicles that allow the adoption of a front without air intakes but also those of combustion vehicles that require a more accurate study on the positioning of the sensors necessary for assistance systems.

Maximum customization

Thanks to the new thin film technology, the MEZZO Panel optimizes the transmission of signals by increasing the safety and communication performance required in the use of components such as radar and sensors. In addition, with integrated lighting technology, the bezel offers a maximum degree of personalization.

But Magna’s plans don’t stop there. The American company, in fact, is already working on VISION Panel, a grille that extends seamlessly over the entire front of the car, integrating all the functions.
