“The Slaves” by Jean Genet premieres at the Warehouse Theatre

Amalia Kavalis, Angeliki Papathemeli and Alexandra Sakellaropoulou star in Jean Genet’s emblematic play “Slaves” directed by Giorgos Skevas. In particular, the long-awaited show premieres on Saturday, November 26, at the Apothecia theater.

The lady is dressed by her maid. The lady is unaccommodating, the maid servile. Both taunt each other, the slave slaps the mistress. Suddenly an alarm goes off and the whole scene collapses. It is revealed that the lady is not a lady at all, but one of the two slaves, who play the game of mistress and slave, when their mistress is absent…

This is how “The Handmaids” begins, which from 1947, when it was staged for the first time in Paris and until today, has been translated and performed countless times on theater stages all over the world, proving the work’s endurance over time.

A masterful text, characterized by the skillful manipulation of language through an intensely poetic form. The alternation of roles, the relations of power and submission, the anxiety for dominance over the other, the class differences that prove to be unbridgeable, eroticism and dependence, create an explosive climate of anxiety and suspense, through the combination of dream and reality, desire and self-punishment, denial but also acceptance of the inviolable rule of life.
