Kota Bharu: A short drama actor on YouTube was charged in the Magistrate’s Court, here, today on two extortion charges that led to fear of a man and made a false report on the rape incident, last December.
The accused, Nor Hafizah Shamsuddin, 31, however, pleaded not guilty and asked to be tried when the charge was read before Magistrate Mohamad Ibrahim Mohammad Ghulam.
According to the first charge, the accused was accused of extorting money from a 29-year-old man, causing him to fear a disaster, that is, to report to the police that the man had raped him.
The offense was committed at a steamed rice restaurant in Taman Bendahara, Pengkalan Chepa here at 3 pm on December 19 last year.
Nor Hafizah was charged under Section 385 of the Penal Code which provides for a maximum jail term of seven years or a fine or whipping or any two of those sentences upon conviction.
For the second charge, the accused allegedly gave false information to police officers that he was raped by the same man and another 21-year-old man with the intention that they would be prosecuted.
The offense was committed at the Kubang Kerian Police Station counter at 12.08 midnight on December 20.
The accused was charged under Section 182 of the Penal Code which provides for imprisonment for up to six months or a maximum fine of RM2,000 or both if convicted.
The prosecution was conducted by Deputy Public Prosecutor Sharifah Amirda Shasha Amir Shariffuddin while the accused was represented by lawyer Riduan Ismail.
Earlier, Sharifah Amirda Shasha applied for the court to set bail at RM5,000 for both charges.
Riduan in his appeal asked for a minimum bail because his client is a housewife besides having to take care of four children aged 10, eight, three and two years.
“The accused’s husband also only does small business. This situation is very burdensome for my client, especially since the country is now facing the spread of the Covid-19 epidemic,” he said.
The court allowed bail of RM2,500 for the first charge and RM1,000 for the second charge respectively with one surety.
The court set February 21 as the re-mention date for the case.
